Embracing Digital Freight Solutions: Building a Resilient, Agile Supply Chain

June 13, 2024

Discover how digital freight solutions enhance efficiency, and collaboration in supply chains. Highlights from Supply Chain Week reveal actionable strategies for a resilient, sustainable future.

As the logistics landscape continues to evolve, the importance of digital freight solutions in creating a resilient and agile supply chain cannot be overstated.

Last week, at Supply Chain Week, our CEO, Geoff Henry, alongside industry leaders Hemandra Maharaj, Primary Freight Manager at Metcash and Jessica Renton, Head of Operations, Planning & Safety at Kimberly Clark, participated in a compelling fireside chat. The key takeaway? Embracing technology and collaboration is essential to navigating the complexities of modern supply chains. Here are the highlights and actionable insights from the event's enlightening sessions.

The Role of Digital Freight Solutions

During the fireside chat, Geoff emphasised the critical role of digital solutions in safeguarding supply chains against disruptions. He remarked,

"With around 50,000 trucking companies in Australia, supporting them is vital for maintaining a balanced and resilient supply chain”.

Key Insights:

  • Visibility & Efficiency: Implementing new track-and-trace technology enhances visibility of product movements, ensuring goods reach their destinations efficiently. This real-time insight allows companies to monitor their products at all times, optimise operations, and improve efficiency, ultimately helping to reduce emissions.

  • Training & Collaboration: Developing training programs and collaborative initiatives addresses the driver shortage and enhances overall industry resilience. Attracting new drivers while maintaining high standards of safety and responsibility is vital to overcoming this challenge and ensuring a steady supply of skilled labour.

  • Sustainability: Defining sustainability reporting metrics for scope 3 emissions helps reduce environmental impact. This is crucial as companies face increasing pressure to meet sustainability goals. Metcash commented on their commitment to sustainability by reviewing data capture and reporting with Ofload’s carbon emissions platform to optimise and reduce waste.

Strategic Diversification and Collaboration

Panellists shared how their companies managed supply chain disruptions, from COVID-19 to natural disasters. The discussion highlighted the need for reshaping supply chains by expanding networks strategically so companies can reduce double handling and transportation costs.

Standout Strategies:

  • Network Optimisation: Expanding distribution centres to strategic locations to streamline inventory management and reduce transport distances. This approach helps align with customer needs and reduces unnecessary transportation.
  • Flexibility in Contracts: Partnering with various freight providers to ensure flexibility and reliability, especially during crises. This strategy mitigates risks associated with relying on a single mode of transportation and enhances the ability to adapt to unexpected disruptions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Forming cross-functional teams to address disruptions holistically, involving all stakeholders from transport to retail operations. This collaboration ensures alignment and cohesive action during crises, enabling companies to respond more effectively to challenges.

Empowering Small Carriers: The Backbone of the Industry

The discussions underscored the importance of supporting small and medium-sized carriers to prevent industry consolidation and maintain a diverse, resilient supply chain to manage and respond to disruptions.

Supporting Small Carriers:

  • Investing in Growth: Providing technology and integration of an end-to-end freight solution to smaller carriers to help them grow and compete. By investing in their growth, larger shippers can ensure a more stable and diverse supply chain.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Creating symbiotic relationships where large and small carriers can thrive together, ensuring no one is left behind. This includes helping small carriers adopt new technologies and improve their operational efficiencies.

Sustainability: A Collective Effort for a Greener Future

Sustainability emerged as a key focus, with leading Australian companies striving to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by 2030. A crucial aspect of this effort involves capturing and reporting data on transport emissions.

Sustainable Practices:

  • Reducing Emissions: Implementing practices to cut down on carbon emissions, such as optimising shipping methods and reducing air in shipments. This not only helps the environment but also reduces costs and improves efficiency.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Engaging with logistics providers and other stakeholders to establish clear sustainability goals and practices. This includes working closely with partners to ensure alignment on sustainability initiatives and sharing best practices.
  • Carbon Analytics Platform: Streamlining efforts to reduce carbon output is made easy with Ofload’s Carbon Analytics Dashboard. This tool automates data collection and reporting on scope 3 emissions, enabling companies to gain valuable insights and adopt best practices for measuring and mitigating the environmental impact of transport activities.

Looking Ahead with Ofload

The conversations at Supply Chain Week highlighted that the future of logistics lies in embracing digital solutions, fostering collaboration, and supporting the long tail of carriers. By investing in technology and sustainable practices, we can create a resilient, efficient, and agile supply chain capable of weathering any storm. As leaders in the industry, we remain committed to driving these innovations and supporting our partners every step of the way.

In the words of our CEO, Geoffroy Henry,

"The long tail of trucking companies is what makes our supply chain resilient and agile. Supporting these small businesses through digital transformation is not just beneficial—it's essential."

As we move forward, we are excited to continue leading the charge towards a more connected, sustainable, and resilient logistics industry.
